Steal in five seconds

Which cars are of interest to thieves, and which ones they don't need for nothing, and what to do about it

An interesting pattern was recently discovered by insurers together with experts of the automobile market and law enforcement officers: it turned out that we have cars that, even if they are left open, are not at all of interest to car thieves...

Let's just note right away that this is certainly not a reason to experiment and once again leave your cars unattended and with the doors unlocked, but the fact remains. If you are the lucky owner of a Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, a Skoda Rapid sedan or a Volvo XC60 crossover, in principle, you can relax a little: your iron horses are unlikely to be of interest to experienced thieves who "specialize" in stealing cars. The same applies to such cars as Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q, BMW X3 and Renault Captur.



What is it connected with? Oddly enough, but with the whims of the market. Black market, of course. Simply put, these cars are not in demand among potential customers of car thieves, so they are simply "not ordered". And it is unprofitable to steal, as they say, such cars for spare parts.

According to statistics, Fiat, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, SsangYoung, Suzuki, Peugeot and Citroen cars were not included in the list of criminals' preferences. Fortunately, owners of Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, KIA, Skoda and Ford cars are not so often victims of car thieves. At least, this is what the theft statistics show.

Інша справа – автомобілі марок Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, а також розповсюджені на наших дорогах Lanos та Chevrolet. Саме вони наразі є найпопулярнішими в автовикрадачів, їх досить часто «замовляють», та й угнати їх, як запевняють експерти, для «спеца» не складає труднощів – деяким вмільцям вистачає від… 5 до 40 секунд! Здивовані? Між тим, це підтверджують результати відповідних досліджень. Щоправда, проводились вони в Британії, а не наших теренах. Втім, повірте, якщо англійські автовикрадачі змогли швидесенько впоратися з хитромудрими (здавалося б!) системами протиугону, то й для вітчизняних злодіїв це теж не складе труднощів. Отже, відкрити Audi TT RS з безключовим доступом вдалося лише за п’ять секунд, Land Discovery Sport – за 10 с (ще 20 секунд знадобилося злодіям, щоб втекти з місця злочину), Land Discovery – за 20 с (щоправда, втекти злочинцям не вдалося завдяки блокуванню системи). Відповідно, відкрити Mercedes-Benz A-Class вдалося за пів хвилини, а BMW X3 та Ford Fiesta – за 40 с. Підкреслимо, що йдеться про моделі з функцією безключового доступу в салон – тож вказаний час пішов у злочинців на перехоплення сигналу та безпосередньо відкриття машини.

By the way, criminals usually act as follows: they scan the key signal of a car equipped with a factory anti-theft system, open the car and drive away to the appropriate place. Next, they wait for a certain time, and only then they are either registered with crossed-out numbers and sold, or handed over to the "customer", or disassembled for spare parts.

За статистикою Генеральної прокуратури України, за десять місяців поточного року в цілому по країні було зареєстровано 4755 випадків незаконного заволодіння транспортними засобами, з яких 4424 – авто приватних осіб. При цьому сумне лідерство за кількістю угонів традиційно утримує столиця, за якою слідують інші мегаполіси – Odesa, Dnipro тощо.

And despite the desperate struggle of law enforcement officers to prevent and solve such crimes, the fact remains: even if you are very lucky and the car is returned to the owner, in most cases this car will need serious repairs. And this is far from the worst option, because it is not always possible to return the car! Therefore, there is only one way out in this situation - to take care of the protection of your car in advance, making the task of thieves as difficult as possible, and at the same time - to minimize your possible losses in the event of theft.
So what should you look out for?

First, do not neglect elementary safety rules: even if you leave the car for a second, do not be lazy to close it. And in general, do not leave the car anywhere - in dark yards, on unlit streets, in improvised parking lots, near parking lots, etc. Believe me, after saving a few hryvnias for an official parking lot, you can get simply crazy losses with "many zeros".

По-друге, про всяк випадок подбайте про додаткові засоби безпеки. Які саме? Тут все залежить від вашого бажання, фантазії і, звичайно, фінансових можливостей. Найбільш ж ефективними засобами убезпечення свого залізного коня від «недобрих очей» вважаються такі: встановлення якісної сигналізації (охоронного комплексу, що передбачає захист в тому числі від електронного зламу), блокування на двері, коробки передач, педалей, керма та замків капоту, поклейка скла броньованою плівкою, тюнінг авто тощо. І тут головне не те, що ці засоби зупинять злодія – повірте, не зупинять. На жаль. Сенс в іншому: подолання цих перешкод потребує додаткового часу та зайвих зусиль злочинця. А час для нього грає ключову роль. Тож, якщо, звичайно, ваш автомобіль не «замовили», скоріш за все, викрадач не захоче копирсатися більше, ніж планував, а значить, врешті відмовиться від наміру поцупити ваше авто, обравши для угону менше захищений транспортний засіб.

Well, one more point. It's unfortunate, but the fact is: no even the most expensive, coolest and most modern alarm system is a "panacea" against car thieves, and installing all possible locks on a car is no guarantee that it will not be of interest to criminals. So, unfortunately, it is simply impossible to insure against the fact that one unfortunate day you will not find your iron horse in its usual place. Believe me, if a thief sets himself the goal of appropriating your car, sooner or later, he will succeed. But you can protect yourself from colossal losses in the event that the car is stolen. Just don't forget CASCO insurance - no matter how cool it is, at the moment it's the only effective tool that allows you to stay, even if you don't have a car, at least with money.
